Concepts
Every idea, on its own page
Each concept below has one page. That page lists every chapter that treats it or mentions it, the concepts it shares those chapters with, and what it grows out of. Chapters link back the same way, so you can move from an idea to where it's used and on to its neighbors.
The nine words
- LoopA repeated cycle where output becomes the next input.
- Third ThingWhat emerges from a Loop that isn't reducible to its parts.
- SeedA repeatable act, thought, or word planted in your attention.
- Local RuleThe specific small repeatable behavior chosen.
- Global FormThe large-scale shape a repeated Local Rule becomes.
- NestA pattern that is one layer inside a larger version of itself.
- LeverageWhere a small change produces a disproportionate effect.
- FoldA Local Rule returning to you after traveling through a Nest.
- TreeThe branching record a Loop's name compresses.
Self scale
- Atomic compositionElectrons move constantly at no cost to identity (Numbers-level); neutrons change the mass but not the element, and some combinations are unstable, decaying on their own schedule (echoes the Compost Heap's unprocessed weight); changing the proton count takes a nuclear reaction and changes the element itself (Paradigm-level).
- Coasting vs. acceleratingHolding a speed already reached costs only enough to cancel drag; building it from zero costs far more, because one is maintaining existing momentum and the other is generating momentum that doesn't exist yet.
- Creative work as compostFailure isn't waste — it's the substrate the next attempt grows out of.
- Naming and defusingThe self-stories that feel like settled fact — "I always quit" — and the practice of catching them as patterns instead of verdicts.
- The association machineA mind doesn't observe and separately interpret; it fuses the two, which is why a harsh self-judgment feels like fact rather than guess.
- The capacity to steerA fast, reliable association is not automatically a beneficial one.
- The core mantra*You feel a line.
- The Sacrifice TrapGrind now, live later is a trade that never pays out.
- The Woven SelfThe Third Thing pointed at the self.
- Two senses of "real"Real as structure (a Third Thing is real independent of anyone perceiving it — solidity, a floral electric field) and real as occurrence (a feeling's occurrence is real simply because it's happening, separate from whether its content is true).
Dyad scale
- Interpersonal complementarityWarmth invites warmth, coldness invites coldness (correspondence); dominance invites deference and deference invites dominance (complementarity, opposite answered with opposite).
- Mutuality, not accountingForces come in pairs; the force lives in the interaction, not in either object.
- Solving for the third legYour Self-Kin, theirs, and the Dyad-Kin you produce are three linked elements; knowing two points toward the third, though lived patterns are less tidy than the table, so the solve is a reading rather than a lookup.
- The DyadA Third Thing at exactly two-person scale.
- The Trust TriangleAuthenticity, empathy, logic; checked rather than assumed.
Skein scale
- Fractal ResistanceBeing the honest variation inside a rigid structure.
- The BannerA shared label with nothing underneath it.
- The company you keepThe popular version and the real mechanism.
- The SkeinReal community, bound by repeated contact rather than a shared label.
Culture scale
- Belief, language, and codePatterns that need a host.
- Beyond tellingWhy traditions with no contact converge.
Cosmos scale
- The Drake equationEach term is another Local-Rule-to-Global-Form threshold (chemistry to life to complexity to intelligence to detectable technology); small real probabilities compounding multiplicatively across a chain, made vivid at the largest scale available.
- The Long VisitorThe Cosmos-scale Turning, triggered by a great comet rather than any calendar: the largest possible gathering, everywhere at once, outdoors.
At every scale
- Fusion depthA Third's scale is what it is made of, not a category assigned to it: two selves running currents produce a dyad-scale Third; two dyads sharing a person produce a skein.
- IsomorphismSame structure, different labels.
- Local Rule across scalesA single Local Rule projected forward, once per scale, since the same rule produces genuinely different Global Forms depending which scale you check it at, not simply "more of the same.".
- The BraidA Skein and a Banner fused; real substance carrying a visible name.
- The Standing ThirdsPatterns given faces.
- The two-pole ruleEvery running Third carries a Tending pole, where it runs stronger, and a Fraying pole, where it runs weaker; neither is good or evil in itself.
- Weather, Climate, TerrainThe three speeds at which any drawn figure can be read: now, this season, the shape underneath a life.
- WeavingReading a situation from four distances.
Across the book
- A rule set that names nothing it producesGo's roughly five rules mention no object the game is actually about, including the one that decides whether a group lives; the entire vocabulary of mastery is emergent.
- A stopped pattern has no poleTending and Fraying describe the direction of a running pattern.
- Action before motivation, and the test it enablesActing first generates wanting, reliably, for capacity problems.
- Agency is not responsibilityThat you can act on something does not make the not-acting a choice.
- Aji — latent structureThings currently doing nothing that are nonetheless changing what remains possible.
- Balance is a waveBalance is never stillness; it is continuous correction whose average looks like rest.
- Becoming a ThirdWhat actually continues, said plainly: the material — conservation of mass, literally — the Fold already in motion, and the noticing itself.
- Being named is not being reducedPattern → Third Thing → real.
- Belonging as a need, not a preferenceIsolation produces craving in the same machinery as hunger, and connection is monitored continuously rather than after other needs are met.
- Bottom-up or nothingA framework built on global forms arising without a designer cannot coherently acquire a central authority; it would refute itself in the act of organizing.
- Chance and worthWhat the pillars leave open.
- Climate, not trajectoryWhat a Standing Third predicts, and the resolution of the predictive admission criterion against the limits of forecasting.
- Commitments multiply rather than addEach new one is carried in the presence of all the others, so cost scales with the pairs rather than the count.
- Compensatory controlWhen agency feels threatened people reach for external structure as a substitute.
- Complicated vs. complexThe first question.
- Compost is a stockNot consolation for a particular loss but an accumulating reservoir that raises the growth rate of everything planted after.
- Conservation and its other halfConservation is why nothing is lost; the second law is why nothing stays.
- Constraint countingFacing several genuinely tangled unknowns (a budget, a deadline, the Iron Triangle), decide whichever one reality has already constrained the most, not whichever feels most exciting to decide.
- Distortion scales with distanceThe Fold returns nearly intact from one step away and nearly unreadable from six, because each edge crossed adds its own shaping.
- Doubling timeSeventy divided by the percentage growth rate.
- Effectiveness is a ratioResults over effort.
- EleganceMaximum complexity from minimum complication.
- EmergenceHow the symphysical appears.
- Emergence vs. luckChance is a fact about one instant; emergence is a fact about the shape many instants make together.
- Empathy vs sympathyFeeling *with* rather than *for*; the second creates distance while looking like closeness.
- Essence versus relationThe default this book argues against: explaining what a thing does by what is inside it rather than by what runs between its parts.
- Fatalism as unavailableNot refuted, which would be weaker.
- Felt evaluation as machineryFast evaluation is not interference with choosing, it is how choosing terminates; damage it and decisions never resolve.
- Floral electric fieldsA dynamically updating relational field, altered by every visit and read by the next visitor for real information neither party holds alone; also the Fold's mechanism with no metaphor required, since each visitor reads a field already shaped by everyone before them.
- Formal grammar as the answer to "that's just a metaphor"Plant growth is modelled in practice by a small symbolic rewriting system, and spots and stripes by two substances spreading and reacting at different rates with no template anywhere.
- Fractal dimensionA coastline has no length: shorten the ruler and the measurement grows without converging, because structure is present at every resolution.
- Fractals were invisible in plain sightPlants are full of them and are not what led anyone to the idea; the mathematics came from coastlines and curves treated as pathological.
- Fun as pattern absorptionFrom game design, and distinct from challenge-skill balance rather than duplicating it: balance says where the sweet spot sits, absorption says what the pleasure signals — that a pattern is going in.
- Going to GroundFifty-two figures is a taxonomy, not a pantheon.
- Holding a paradigm as a paradigmThe top rung: not a change to the system but a change in grip.
- Instruments for auditing this frameworkShow the correspondence or admit pattern-matching; what would make this reading wrong; did the name change what you'd do; count the parts; ask whether it lands; ask which kind of claim you are holding.
- Latency, and the felt difference between doing and undergoingA return that closes fast and clean registers as *something you did*; one that is slow or scrambled registers as *something that happened*, even when you are the one feeding it.
- Leveling the fieldThe exit from concentration: reset some portion of accumulated advantage periodically, from outside the loop's own logic, before the gap becomes structural.
- Loop periodA loop's natural period sets how long you need to have watched before honestly telling a trend from a stage; a fast loop announces itself, a slow one disguises itself as the ground you're standing on.
- Measured, modelled, offeredThe sixth instrument.
- Mechanism, not determinismThe framework's actual commitment: causes exist and are findable.
- Mine to work, not my faultTwo questions that are easy to collapse into one.
- Need → belief → behaviorA Local Rule is the visible end of a three-link chain.
- Not self-helpThis belief system tells you it was built — on purpose, and this isn't self-help or organization-building.
- Open and closed boundariesA closed boundary (judged by external behavior, not internal accuracy) is not a lesser Word — it's often the correct one, and the elegance test applies directly: the right boundary gives the most correct prediction for the least internal machinery the purpose actually needs.
- Order is not freeAny arrangement is one of an enormous number, nearly all less organized, so holding one costs continuously.
- Position, speed, accelerationThe second question.
- Presence as a channel conditionNot a virtue.
- Reach is composable*Unreachable* is not a property of a rung but a relation between a rung and whoever reaches.
- Receiving, and the six responsesWhat to do with what arrives rather than what you send: fighting back, withdrawing, parley, doing nothing, withholding, blending.
- Reinforcing and balancing rhythmFractalism's genesis story: no voice speaking from outside the system — only a small pattern, repeating, until repetition became a universe.
- ResonanceFinding your exact situation already has a name installs faster than derivation, which is the actual argument for why the Standing Thirds are characters rather than a plain list of tendencies.
- Rules multiply too, in both directionsThe same arithmetic that makes a tiny rule set generative makes an over-specified one unmanageable; which reading you get, lifeline or snare, depends on whether you wanted emergence or completion.
- Satisfaction is logarithmicEqual increments of felt gain require multiplicative increases in input, so a reinforcing loop and its perception are inverse curves: exponential growth only breaks even for feeling, and felt gain decays as soon as growth slows.
- Self-organizationThe rung measuring whether a system can still grow structure it did not have, as distinct from running its existing structure better.
- Sensitive dependence, and the two unpredictabilitiesTwo different things stop a Global Form being predictable, and they ask for different responses, so the book keeps them apart.
- Shared-edge leverageA high-leverage connection is a maximally shared one, load-bearing for many downstream structures at once; a low-leverage one is peripheral, touching nothing beyond its own corner.
- Should time versus likely timeA *should*-estimate is pushed and never checked; a *likely*-estimate is pulled toward a record.
- Sign-flipping couplingsDistinct from an ordinary threshold crossing: a single relationship whose effective sign changes as a direct consequence of crossing a threshold, same rule, no new force (logistic growth's carrying capacity; debt, expansionary below a capacity and corrosive above it, general shape credible, specific universal thresholds not).
- Signed-loop polarityEvery link in a loop carries a sign (does more of the cause produce more or less of the effect); count the negative links, and an even count (including zero) is reinforcing, an odd count is balancing.
- SolidityYou are not touching your chair; no particle in you meets a particle in it, and what you feel as resistance is a field relationship with real emptiness on both sides.
- Suffering as usable materialSelf, Dyad, and Skein were never separate — and the whole practice was always closer to a rising tide than a ledger.
- Sute-ishi — the deliberate releaseLetting go of something still saveable because holding it costs more than it is worth.
- The biosphere is a Third Thing but not a Standing ThirdEmergent, with weight none of its parts contain, but with no repeated act underneath it.
- The deadlock with no move inside itA repeating exchange where every available move within the pattern is the pattern.
- The Fold is the Nest seen up closeOne circuit described in two places: a rule travelling out and returning changed is the Fold; a form above arriving as a rule in your day is the Nest read downward.
- The forward chain that multipliesA catastrophic story runs in individually plausible steps and compounds down to something far less likely than any step in it.
- The four moves, and holdLook, plant, tend, thin: every change that can be made to a loop.
- The Full Unravelling, as a derivationDraw two Self-Kin and stop.
- The insight asymmetryPeople are biased toward believing they understand others better than others understand them.
- The ledger error, both directions*I tended, so good is owed* and *bad happened, so something was frayed* are one mistake: an account inferred from an outcome.
- The Nest, read downwardThe pillar stated in both directions.
- The Oriental hornet's solar cycleA literal, not metaphorical, instance of tide-based homeostasis: solar energy harvested by the cuticle, activity correlated with sunlight intensity, the same reinforcing-then-balancing rhythm already claimed for the tide, running in a real insect.
- The parsimony ruleThe simplest reading that accounts for the behavior is the correct one, and you stop at it.
- The power gapLeverage can be real and not yours to reach.
- The rate polePlanting faster than you can tend.
- The resistant partnerChanging your leg of a triangle changes what the two of you produce, but against someone invested in the previous outcome the change is met rather than accepted.
- The return pathWhat separates Second-Order Design's poles, and the reason the figure has an intervention point at all.
- The rubber handThe self's boundary demonstrated rather than argued: two agreeing sensory streams relocate body ownership onto an object within about a minute, complete with protective flinch.
- The seam for an existing faithThe aggregate of every pattern in motion has a direction that is unauthored and unreachable by petition.
- The self extends to where your actions close a loopThe active counterpart to the rubber hand: behind a wheel the boundary moves to the edge of the car, and nobody rear-ended says *he hit my car*.
- The Seven IterationsFractalism's genesis story: no voice speaking from outside the system — only a small pattern, repeating, until repetition became a universe.
- The stable position vs. the stalled oneSome mutual deadlocks are legitimate final results, held in place because whoever moves first pays more.
- The StandpointLeverage and Perspective: your reach and your view, the two directions of one loop between you and the pattern.
- The strange loopA system containing a description of itself cannot complete that description from inside: the description must include itself describing, and it does not close.
- The symphysicalWhat physical things make once their parts interact, standing beside "metaphysical" rather than above it.
- The Three PillarsOne operation seen three times: a loop that holds becomes a part.
- The three returns — Brush, Tree, ForestA third axis, alongside Scale (who is involved) and Speed (how fast it turns).
- The three-legged stallCapacity, understanding, want; non-substitutable fixes; the test for the third leg is whether you look forward to starting or only to having finished.
- The two halves of one famous numberThe worked case for appeal-versus-measurement.
- The two questionsFirst: does anything here feed back into itself?
- The World-KinThree figures, derived rather than chosen: two Culture-Kin sharing a Skein-Kin.
- This is not careThe framework is a way of looking, not treatment.
- Three kinds of knowingBeing told a pattern (the Loop-name, transmissible, cheap), having lived a pattern (its Tree, which can only be walked), and knowing which pattern you're currently inside (neither of the first two, and not produced by either).
- Two coupled modelsA game builds one mental model indirectly through a feedback loop; a conversation builds two, each changing in response to the other.
- Two gatesThe ladder is gated by position; the Nest is gated by connection.
- Vision — the Sacrifice Trap's Tending, read the other wayRead only as a snare, the Sacrifice Trap is half a figure: a direction that makes today instrumental.
- What actually bonds a groupNot synchrony.
- What's unfinishedThis book will be wrong about some things — here is what's genuinely unsettled, and the actual mechanism for revising any of it.
- Who is feeding, who is absorbingComplementarity already says the control axis produces fitted *opposite* rules rather than matching ones, which means a Dyad-Kin's two halves are often not comparable.
- Why a Turning has an aim rather than two polesPoles describe the direction of a found pattern; intent describes what a made thing is for.
- Why leverage stopsThe World tier makes the Infinite Boundary's place legible: it begins exactly where pushing stops being possible, the same rule reaching its edge rather than a pass granted for convenience.
- Why the practices workThe experiencing self, the remembering self, and the observing self — three research traditions converging on a self that was always assembled.
- Why this is a deck and not a divinationThe form is borrowed from tarot and the three changes are load-bearing: the cards describe rather than foretell, no card is fortunate, and the randomness exists to supply the angle you would not have chosen.
- Word vs. LabelPulled toward something real, or pushed to produce an effect.
