Three kinds of knowing
Being told a pattern (the Loop-name, transmissible, cheap), having lived a pattern (its Tree, which can only be walked), and knowing which pattern you're currently inside (neither of the first two, and not produced by either). Scale-Tagging, the complex/complicated gate, and the two-pole check all serve the third.
