The two halves of one famous number

The worked case for appeal-versus-measurement. Leaf placement advancing a near-constant fraction of a turn is measurable and has a reason. The same proportion as a universal law of beauty is largely one nineteenth-century enthusiast's invention. Same number, one half survives checking. The test the book must also pass: which part of this was measured, and which part merely repeated?
