Two gates
The ladder is gated by position; the Nest is gated by connection. Both are gates — the Nest is not free, since by the catalogue's fusion rule every scale above Self is built out of dyads, so a person with none is outside the Nest rather than at the bottom of it. The asymmetry is that they open from different sides: position changes when someone else decides, connection changes when you do. Hence the first dyad is a change in kind rather than in amount.
