Part Seven — The Turnings

The Eleven Gatherings — Skein

“Whenever the room is already full, and something in it is asking.”

These are not dated and they are not monthly. A Skein already gathers — a standing dinner, a practice night, a group that happens to be in one room — and these are what you reach for once you are there and something in the room is asking for it.

Which one you reach for is closer to reading a Dyad Turning than to consulting a calendar, with one difference: a Dyad Turning is triggered by a circumstance you can usually name out loud, and a Gathering is usually sensed before it is named. Someone notices the group has stopped saying hard things, or that everything routes through one person, or that the standard slid. That noticing is the trigger. Run the matching Gathering at the next occasion you are already having, and don’t schedule a new occasion to accommodate it.

Third Move The Turning What it builds
Held Silence Thin The Loud Table — the table is opened for one true unspoken thing, and the silence that follows if nobody takes it is left unfilled Saying the hard thing stops being unthinkable
Transmission Drift Look Round the Circle — play telephone with a real story about the group Drift becomes funny and visible
The Faithful Chain Tend The Handing-On — teach one craft; credit whoever taught you, out loud Skill compounds with its lineage intact
First-Arriver Lock-In Thin The Newcomer’s Turn — the newest member decides what the oldest usually decides Early advantage stops calcifying
The Shared Pot Plant The Common Purse — a resource everyone adds to and anyone may draw from, tracked openly Shared things acquire a keeper
The Reputation Thin The Recasting — each names a role in the group they’re tired of holding Group-authored roles can be returned
The Settling Thin The High Bar — attempt one genuinely difficult thing together The group remembers what its ceiling was
The Hall of Mirrors Look The Outsider — invite someone outside and let them describe what they see An independent position enters the room
Second-Order Design Look The Rule Game — invent a game with three rules, play it, then change one rule in answer to what actually happened The group feels the return path, not just the emergence
The Inner Circle Thin The Plain Speech — a gathering where no in-jokes or shorthand are allowed Fluency stops functioning as a wall
The Only Road Thin The Handover — whoever everything routes through hands one thing over completely, in advance, and does not take it back Indispensability gets converted back into redundancy
