Reading Your Own Cycle

Not every loop behaves the same way, and one specific distinction is worth learning to feel in your own daily rhythm before you try to apply it anywhere more complicated: the difference between a reinforcing loop, which amplifies whatever direction it’s already moving in, and a balancing loop, which corrects back toward some middle point.
Here’s a version of this you can actually check against your own life. Picture two people, structured around the same twenty-four hours. One of them treats a good morning as fuel — waking early, moving their body, starting work while it’s quiet — and each piece reinforces the next, so a good morning tends to produce a good day, which tends to produce a good next morning. Small “up” actions compound; several good mornings in a row have an aggregate effect larger than any one of them alone. This is a reinforcing loop, and it’s not inherently virtuous — reinforcing loops amplify whatever they’re loaded with, including bad momentum, not just good.
The other person’s rhythm runs the opposite shape: energy builds across the day, peaks late, and requires an active wind-down before rest is possible at all — the loop doesn’t compound in one direction so much as swing and return, evening pulling the day back toward a baseline the way a thermostat pulls a room back toward a set point. Neither shape is a character flaw. They’re both loops. They just close differently.
The practical use of this chapter is not to force yourself into whichever shape sounds more virtuous. It’s to actually notice which one you’re running, honestly, before trying to change anything about your schedule, your habits, or your self-story. A person running a naturally balancing rhythm who keeps trying to force reinforcing-loop advice onto themselves — “just stack more good mornings” — will experience repeated, confusing failure that has nothing to do with discipline and everything to do with fighting the wrong kind of loop. Read your own cycle first. Design your Local Rules to work with its actual shape, not against it.
